Bill charlap, piano; Jon Gordon, saxophone

Pianist Bill Charlap returns to the Theatre, accompanied for the first time by saxophonist Jon Gordon, who was the first-place winner in the 1996 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. They will be celebrating their new CD, "Contrast," on the Doubletime label. Charlap's most recent recording on the Blue Note label is "Stardust," a CD in which he and his trio are joined by the greats: Tony Bennett, Jim Hall, Shirley Horn, and Frank Wess.

Sunday, February 2, 2003 at 3 p.m. MOZART SONATAS for PIANO and VIOLIN
Lambert Orkis, piano; Lisa-Beth Lambert, violin

Grammy Award winning pianist Lambert Orkis and violinist Lisa-Beth Lambert, who was a member of the National Symphony Orchestra for six seasons before joining the Philadelphia Orchestra in the fall of 2001, give the second in a series of three concerts comprising all 16 Sonatas for Piano and Violin by Mozart. As Lambert Orkis will be using in these concerts a fortepiano similar to those used by Mozart himself, this instrument will act as a virtual time-machine, transporting the audience back to the musical sensations of an earlier epoch. Program for this concert: Sonata in F Major, KV 376; Sonata in E Flat Major, KV 481; Sonata in G Major, KV 379; Sonata in e minor, KV 304; Sonata in B Flat Major, KV 454.

Celebrated jazz guitarist Jimmy Bruno returns for a fifth concert here - this time with Jeff Pedros, a young rising star on bass. Each year this concert is a near-sellout, as Bruno's fans travel from near and far to hear his exciting performances.

The Castle Trio

The members of the Castle Trio, Lambert Orkis, fortepiano, Marilyn McDonald, violin, and Kenneth Slowik, cello, have been performing togther since 1984 throughout the United States and Europe. They have recorded the complete trios of Beethoven, and works of other composers, for which the group has received several awards and universal critical acclaim. Their appearances as trio-in-residence at the Smithsonian regularly draw capacity crowds, and many performances have been distributed by National Public Radio, the BBC, and other international broadcasting systems. “. . .a trio of real virtuoso players who savor the sonority of the old instruments and who play beautifully together." BBC Record Review. "Their textural and dynamic contrasts make you listen to this music with new ears." Gramophone. Amanda Balestrieri, soprano, and Consort of Viols

Amanda Balestrieri performs with the National Symphony Orchestra, Maryland Handel Festival and Santa Fe Pro Musica. She has sung under the baton of Neville Marriner, Christopher Hogwood, Peter Phillips and Leonard Slatkin. This is the final concert in the eleventh season of the Smithsonian at Little Washington series. It represents another performance in the Smithsonian Chamber Players' "Brilliance of the Baroque" series. Program for this concert: Music of seventeenth-century England.

Hasse Borup, violin; Amy Leung, cello

Borup graduated from the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music. As concert master of the Copenhagen String Orchestra, he has performed throughout Europe, with solo performances in Venice, Cremona and Paris. A member of the Coolidge String Quartet, he studied with the Guarneri Quartet, Isaac Stern and others. Leung graduated from the New England Conservatory. In 1994 she won the Kranichsteiner Interpretation Prize in Germany. Like Borup, she was a member of the Coolidge Quartet and has performed in Asia, Australia, and Europe. Program for this concert: Johann Sebastian Bach, Sonata for violin solo, C major; Johann Sebastian Bach, Suite for violoncello solo, D minor; Maurice Ravel, Sonata for violin and cello.
