JAZZ GUITAR DUO
Gene Bertoncini & Frank Vignola
|
The New Yorker writes, “Bertoncini is an affecting, highly original guitarist who moves easily back and forth between classical and jazz guitar.” Rave reviews of Bertoncini’s new solo album, “Body and Soul”, describe it as “stunningly beautiful,” “transcendent,” and “a masterpiece.” Harmonia Mundi of France writes of the youthful Frank Vignola, “How is it possible that such a phenomenon appears suddenly from nowhere? . . . . Vignola explodes with ease, versatility, natural fluency and spontaneity.” Vignola’s two new CDs are scheduled to be released this fall.

HASKELL SMALL, piano recital
|
Mozart, Sonata in C Major, k545; Schubert, Selection of Waltzes; Satie, Sports et Divertissements; Poulenc, Mouvements Perpetuels; Small, Symphony for Solo Piano, first movement; Takemitsu, Rain Tree Sketch; Ginastera, Three Argentine Dances.
“Haskell Small is one of the most interesting musicians in Washington, although his name is familiar mostly to connoisseurs. He is a pianist who has been (rightly) praised by England’s Musical Times for his ‘dazzling prodigious technique’ and a composer who manages to pursue new ideas while remaining approachable.” Joseph McLellan in The Washington Post. Haskell Small first came to public attention after winning the Pittsburgh Concert Society auditions at the age of 21. A highly successful European tour quickly followed, beginning with an appearance at the Barga Festival in Italy. Subsequent re-engagements took him to Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, China and South America. His concerts throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the National Gallery of Art, the Kennedy Center, and the Spoleto Festival, have won him an enthusiastic following.
