The famous political humorist and satirist Mark Russell presents his unique perspective on the current political scene. This performance is sold out and there is a short waiting list.

Rappahannock County's observance of the birthday of the great civil rights leader. A community event. No admission charge.
 
 
Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 8 p.m. BILL HARRIS TRIO

A classic jazz piano trio playing classic standards: Bill Harris, piano; Chuck Redd, drums; Tommy Cecil, bass. Jazz pianist Bill Harris has recently given concerts in Mexico and Chile. He has been based in the Washington D.C. area since 1977. Among his favorite local venues are Blues Alley, the Theatre at Washington, Virginia, and the Smithsonian. Further afield he enjoys performing at Snug Harbor in New Orleans, the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, and the New Daisy Theatre in Mamphis -- and jazz festivals everywhere. Chuck Redd has long been a favorite at the Theatre, first coming here with Charlie Byrd. He joined the Charlie Byrd Trio when he was a youthful 21 year old and enjoys a successful career playing drums and vibes at home and abroad. Tommy Cecil is one of the best known and most in demand bassists in the Washington metropolitan area, and far beyond. He, too, has played at the Theatre on many occasions.
 
 
Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 8 p.m. MAURICE HINES and friends

Maurice Hines' long and illustrious career includes a Tony Award nomination as Best Actor in Musical for his Broadway show "Uptown...It's Hot!" As a youngster, he performed in New York, Las Vegas and Europe and made numerous tv appearances with his brother, Greg, and their father as "Hines, Hines and Dad". He has toured in "Guys and Dolls", danced in the musical "Eubie!" and starred as Jelly Roll Morton on tour in "Jelly's Last Jam". He has directed for Radio City Music Hall, directed and choreographed the musical "Havana Night" in Cuba and "The Red Shoes" in Santo Domingo. And these are just a few illustrations from a busy, creative, and productive professional life. For the concert at the Theatre, Mr. Hines will sing music from his many discs, including his recent jazz CD "Maurice", on the Arbors label, from Broadway, and more.

Brilliance of the Baroque

The Theatre and The Smithsonian Chamber Players present the first concert in the sixteenth season of the Smithsonian at Little Washington. "The Brilliance of the Baroque" music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, and Philipp Heinrich Erlebach. Marilyn McDonald, violin, Kenneth Slowik, viola da gamba, James Weaver, harpsichord.

Renowned guitarist Frank Vignola brings an evening of jazz guitar and musical excitement with his new ensemble and special guests. Always a favorite at the Theatre, Vignola's appearance will come during a national tour that will culminate with a new live CD and DVD recording!

Cornet, clarinet, trombone, banjo, bass and drums join to present Dixieland and small band jazz of the 1920s and 1930s.

Audrey Andrist, piano

Franz Schubert: A Major Sonata (the "little" A major); Frederic Chopin: set of short pieces, Nocturne, Waltz, two Mazurkas and the Revoluntionary Etude; Robert Schumann: Fantasy, op.17; Samuel Barber: Excursions, op.20. Canadian pianist Audrey Andrist has performed throughout the United States and Canada, and in Europe, China and Japan. A graduate of the Juilliard School's doctoral program, she has won first prize in several competitions including the San Antonio International and the Juilliard Concert Competition. She has appeared as soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, the Juilliard Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall, and the CBC Vancouver Symphony.
